Antrel Rolle: Criminal Activity Is What Is Missing At The University Of Miami

No Guts contributor, J Will drops by with an intriguing interview between a Miami radio station and Cardinals safety, Antrel Rolle.

Lost in the shuffle of all the hoopla and interviews during Super Bowl week, one interview seemed to have slipped through the cracks. Former Miami Hurricanes corner back, Antrel Rolle was on 560 WQAM in Miami last Monday discussing how the Arizona Cardinals made it to the Super Bowl and how he and his teammates were preparing for the game. The interview took an unexpected detour once the conversation turned to the Miami Hurricanes and what they needed to do to get back to winning championships. This is what Antrel had to say:

They just need to get that attitude back, you know go steal a couple of cars, go break into a couple of houses, do whatever it takes to just to get that attitude back, go out there and do something bad, I mean it doesn’t matter, we will forgive you, just bring that attitude back to “The U”, we need it.

Now, I know that it was Super Bowl week and people are known for saying dumb things, but this is ridiculous. What does stealing cars and breaking into houses have to do with the attitudes of the players? I thought that was the reason most of the kids from the Miami area play football, to avoid doing things like that. Attitude is not the problem for the Hurricanes. The problem is that during the Larry Coker years, they didn’t recruit or develop the players like they did in the glory years. So Randy Shannon basically had to start from scratch. But leave it to Antrel Rolle to clear everything up for everyone. I guess it’s a Canes thing, because I really don’t understand.

Here’s the full audio interview. It’s kinda long and Rolle’s comments about “Da U” are near the end, but it’s well worth the listen.

Sarkisian Hitting The Ground Running By Racking Up The Recruiting Violations

Steve Sarkisian isn’t wasting anytime bringing the USC culture to his new gig at the University of Washington. Sarkisian and defensive coordinator, Nick Holt committed two secondary recruiting violations (the second occurrence in as many weeks) when they met with James Boyd (who happens to be committed to his former employer), Boyd’s coach, two other players from Boyd’s high school team (a junior and a senior), and Los Angeles Times reporter, Ben Bolch. The meeting, well meetings took place at a Los Angeles hair salon and then again at a coffee house.

The school acknowledges that Sarkisian and Holt shouldn’t have met with the junior as well as meeting with a prospect in the company of a press member, but they contend that the coaches were placed in a “awkward situation”.

I want to make it clear that we do not tolerate NCAA violations, Washington Athletic Director Scott Woodward said in the statement. We, as a department, are committed to compliance with the rules. Coach Sarkisian and Coach Holt found themselves in an awkward situation that was not of their doing. They regret that the incident occurred, and I’m confident that they will handle similar circumstances differently in the future.

Let me take a moment to get the facts together. They meet a group of players (one of which they covet) and their coach all the while they’re aware that a member of the press is present. And they meet with them in not one, but two different locations. Yet, neither coach believed that they should have removed themselves from the situation. This is definitely of their doing. But here’s cause for optimism for Husky fans. These type of things worked at USC, why can’t they work at Washington too?

What Good Is A One Year Contract If Bowden Doesn’t Sign It?

No Guts contributor, J Will drops by to give his perspective on the soap opera going on in Tallahassee regarding Bobby Bowden’s contract.

Remember the one year contract that Bobby Bowden was supposed to sign this off season? Well he has yet to sign it. And now there are a lot of rumors coming out of Tallahassee that Bowden wants a three year contract, similar to JoePa’s. No problem, right? Well that would keep Bowden at Florida State past the 2010 deadline set in Jimbo Fisher’s contract. The result? Florida State would owe Fisher $5 million.
The school’s administration has told Bowden that he can only have a one year contract, but apparently, that’s not sitting very well with him. Bowden (regardless of what he says) he wants to be the all-time winningest coach in college football and with JoePa sticking around for three more years, a one year contract won’t help his cause.

Since there is a lot of talk of the Seminoles having to forfeit some games due to NCAA sanctions stemming from “tutor-gate”, Bowden might be waiting to see how many games they are going to lose. While Bowden is waiting on the NCAA to rule, FSU’s offensive line coach, Rick Trickett, is in limbo because he was told that he can’t get his extension done until Bowden’s contract is done. Trickett ,of course, is not happy with this and feels he’s not getting any respect. Many Seminole fans are upset with this because Trickett looks to have the offensive line headed in the right direction and the Seminoles can’t afford to lose him.

You would think these problems would happen to a team that just had a losing season, but not one that just won 9 games. Bobby Bowden is a legend, but has to understand that he can’t coach forever and that he made an agreement with the coach in waiting, Jimbo Fisher. The question is, whether Bowden wants to keep the program that he built from getting back to at least winning the ACC, or does he want to keep giving us the speech about “we are one superstar player away” every year. My prediction is that the 2009 season will be Bowden’s last because he will be too far behind JoePa in the all-time wins department due to the NCAA sanctions, but could possibly win the ACC or at least another bowl game. The only thing Bowden won’t do is stop the losing streak to the Gators, but hey, two out of three ain’t bad.

You Can Sleep At Night Again Dabo, CJ’s Coming Back

In a surprising move, to say the least, CJ Spiller has chose not to enter the NFL draft and return to Clemson for his senior season. Who’s unhappy about this? A couple of NFL teams that had visions of CJ returning punts, kickoffs, and lining up in the backfield as well as in the slot. Who happy about this? Definitely Dabo Swinney. Here’s what Dabo had to say after CJ’s press conference.

I am obviously thrilled that C.J. Spiller will be returning to Clemson next year. It was just like the day he signed with us three years ago. There was a lot of anticipation in what he would decide. I really feel this is the best decision for C.J. He will be our featured player in our offense next year. I am anxious to see what he can do in that role. He is a back who can rush for 1000 and get another 500 receiving. That is something that has never been done at Clemson. He can be a first-team All-American and a Heisman candidate.

You forgot something else that CJ can accomplish this upcoming season, Dabo. He can single handily make your first season a success which would go a long way in keeping you employed for the long haul.

For Those Scoring At Home, It’s Now Jags 2, BC 1

There’s that smile again. So you know what that means. Boston College has once again felt the curse of the Jags. This time Miami came into Chestnut Hill and walked away with a victory. Respectable loss I must say but we would be remiss if we didn’t point out that Boston College’s men’s basketball team is 0-2 since the firing of Jeff Jagodzinski.

Is it too late to bring Jags back?

And don’t look now, but the men’s hockey team is now feeling it too. They have yet to win a game since the firing of Jags on January 7th. And here’s your proof. That’s right, no wins and a tie.

Starting to believe yet? If not, don’t you worry. We’ll keep an eye on this even if no one else will.

Are the Florida Gators undisputed champions?

Last night the Florida Gators defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in the BCS National Championship game 24-14. A game once thought to be a shootout, was dominated by the stout defenses.

In the AP and Coach’s Polls, the Gators are ranked #1, but Utah received 16 1st place votes in the AP both poll. Utah was the only team in FBS to finish the season undefeated.

Is Florida the true champion? Well, that answer depends on who you ask. Some believe that Utah has a legit beef, while others vouch for Texas or USC who both finished with 1 loss.

Without a playoff system, deciding who is better than who gets kind of messy. Instead of creating an efficient way to create a playoff system, the BCS uses some computer format to rank teams. Therefore, we are left judging which team’s loss was worst than the other’s. Florida, the BCS champ, lost to Mississippi who beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl; Texas Tech beat Texas, but Texas beat Oklahoma, who played for the National Championship. Not to mention USC who won the PAC-10, a conference that finished 5-0 in bowl games this season. I know, it doesn’t make any sense at all.

When will the madness end? Only when the BCS commissioners and university presidents decided they’ve made enough money. There were 34 bowl games this season, too many in my opinion. Of all the major collegiate sports, college football is the only one that picks a champion rather then letting the players decide it on the field. Nevertheless, I still congratulate Florida on a great season, but when college football finally incorporates a playoff system, BCS era champs are going to have a big asterisk next to their name.

Boston College, The Curse Of The Jags Is Now Upon You

This isn’t the look of a man who just got fired from his job as the Boston College head football coach . Most people in his situation would have a face full of pain and despair. Well, not Jeff Jagodzinski. This is a man who know his worth. He knows what he brought to Boston College and more importantly what he has left. And what he has left will haunt Boston College for years to come.

Athletic director Gene DeFilippo thought that he had the last laugh, but boy was he wrong. He had no idea what he was doing to the entire BC athletic program by firing Jagodzinski. Now, the curse of the Jags has been unleashed on the entire program.

And it didn’t take long for BC to start feeling the effects. Just hours after Jagodzinski was fired, the men’s basketball team, fresh off a huge upset of #1 ranked North Carolina, lost to Harvard 82-70. Let me repeat that. They lost to HARVARD 82-70, AT HOME.

The curse claims it’s first victim

Coincidence? I think not. Circle this date on your calendars folk. January 7, 2009 marks the downfall of the Boston College athletic program.

The BCS Games Have Sucked, Yet You Expect Us To Buy The Replays From ITunes?

During last night’s Fiesta Bowl (the best BCS bowl thus far, go figure), Fox showed no “shame in their game” by making sure that every viewer knew that they can buy the replays of every BCS game from iTunes. (We were reminded at least 3 times, might I add)

I thought to myself, “this has to be a joke”. So out of curiosity I fired up iTunes and searched for “BCS games”, and low and behold, there they were. It even seems that Fox has been doing this since 2007. Am I the only one who didn’t know about this?

Besides finding useless replays, I even found out an interesting tidbit. The Cotton Bowl is also considered a BCS Bowl. When did this happen? Oh, that’s right. It never happened. Yet, that doesn’t seem to bother Fox:

I will refrain from commenting on how desperate it seems to add a non BCS game to your “BCS game replays” package because it was actually one of the better games of the bowl season. I’ll just stick to the idea as a whole.

So let me get this straight. You want me to pay $2.99 for replays of games that I couldn’t bring myself to finish when they were shown on television for FREE? You know, McDonald’s has just unveiled the Double Cheeseburger Combo for $2.99. I think I will go with that. And I don’t even eat beef!

This Weekend’s Bowl Games, Who We Got

The second weekend of bowl match ups are a bit more intriguing than last week only because of the names that will be playing. The slate is full of programs looking to build momentum for next year and hopefully rise to prominence. But enough of the intro, let’s get to the picks!

Emerald Bowl: Miami (7-5) vs Cal (8-4)Emerald Nuts
Cal has won it’s last two and Miami has lost it’s last two. Cal has one of the best backs in the nation in Jahvid Best and if Miami wants to win, they need to find a way to contain him. Odds are they won’t and they will struggle moving the ball with their anemic offense. But look on the bright side Miami fans, Da U at least made a bowl this year.

Prediction: Miami 17 - Cal 30

Champs Sports Bowl: Wisconsin (7-5) vs Florida State (8-4)
This one is gonna be an ugly one way or another. Either Wisconsin will pound the Noles into submission with their bruising ground attack or the Nole’s speed will run the Badgers off the field. I’ll go with the latter because I desperately want to be a Nole homer again.

Prediction: Wisconsin 17 – FSU 34

Meineke Car Care Bowl: West Virgina (8-4) vs North Carolina (8-4)
This one is easily the best game of the weekend and just our luck, it’s the first one of the weekend as well. Both squad’s limp into Stillwater after dropping late season games which ultimately cost them conference championships. The Mountaineer seniors are looking to finish their career 4-0 in bowl games and the young Tarheels are looking to catapult their program to prominence. Tough call, but I have to go with the Mountaineer seniors in a close one.

Prediction: West Virginia 24 – North Carolina 21

Independence Bowl: Northern Illinois (6-6) vs Louisiana Tech (7-5)
In essentially a home game for Northern Illinois, Louisiana Tech will have to battle the Huskies’ fans as well as their potent rushing attack. La Tech’s rushing attack is also stellar but their inefficiencies at quarterback will be their downfall.

Prediction: Northern Illinois 20 – Lousiana Tech 13
