Ron King: When School Spirit Goes Too Far

In case you missed it, Florida State retired Ron King’s jersey at halftime of Saturday’s game against Clemson. And for all you jive turkeys that don’t know who Ron King is, here’s a link complete with a fro that has everything you need to know.

Now on to what we’re here for, Mr. King’s suit. I’m all for school spirit, but let’s be real, Ron. A gold suit with garnet pinstripes? Oh and a garnet top hat? And must you wear the shades? I watched this game from start to finish and I didn’t see the sun shining on my television. Maybe I just didn’t notice it. I doubt it though.

Kids, please don’t try this at home.

Wake Me Up When The Real Rankings Come Out

You know, when 64 teams are seeded 1-16. Not this #1 ranking that gets passed around quicker than herpes in a beer pong game. This is a year that we can confidently say that there isn’t a clear cut #1 team. Which is definitely fine by me. Just makes the games in March even more interesting.

There has been five different teams ranked #1 this year (North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, Duke, Connecticut). Pittsburgh, the most recent #1, is on it’s second go-round. And that lasted all of a day as Providence took them down last night, 81-73. On a side note, looking at the picture above made me wonder if Providence’s #1 fan was present for the celebration. Here’s some of his best work.

The Best Coach Meltdowns

Meltdown
The post-game press conference is usually a time to reflect on what went wrong or right in the game that your team just played. It’s a time to acknowledge players that did a good job for your team as well as your opponent’s. It’s even a time to show good sportsmanship whether you just won or lost. But every once in a while, the post game press conference takes a turn for the worst. So lucky for you, we’ve compiled a pretty solid list of the best meltdowns by coaches. Just so you know, the language is a little salty in a few of these so don’t crank these up for all of the office to hear. Nonetheless, you’re welcome.

We’ll get things going with John Chaney going for the throat of John Calipari. The best part about this meltdown was that it wasn’t even at his press conference. He just invited himself to Calipari’s.

I didn’t know who Kevin Borseth was before this meltdown. He didn’t waste any time introducing himself. And he did his best to make sure we never forget him or his meltdown.

A rather calm Hal McRae took the time to sit down with reporters after the usual loss by the Royals. He tried to keep it together, but once he lost it, he really lost it. He then leaves them with, “put that in your pipe and smoke it”. Classic.

Ahh, the NFL meltdown of all meltdowns. No introduction is needed here. I give you Dennis Green in, “They are who we thought they were”.

Don’t mess with Mike Gundy’s players and never forget that he’s a man. The best part? The ovation Gundy received while leaving the room.

And just for good measure, here’s the King of Meltdowns, Bobby Knight proving that sometimes one can’t wait for the post-game press conference.

Whatever Happened To Having A Home And An Away Jersey?

The picture above is what us basketball purists like to call “hustle”. It’s the way the game is supposed to be played. But there’s just one issue with this picture. Which player plays for the home team? Is it the guy in the Kentucky blue or the guy in the Vandy gold? Why can’t I just watch a game without having to even think about these types of thing.

Back in the good ole days, teams had two jerseys. A white one for home games and a dark one for road games. When the referee yelled, “white’s ball”, you knew whose ball it was. These days, a team is bound to show up in any color. And thus, we get to watch two teams play essentially wearing “away colored” jerseys. If we could only go back to the days when you knew who was the home team. Those were much simpler times.

Add Ensuring PAC 10 Coaches Have Freedom Of Speech To President Obama’s To Do List.

Tim Floyd has been ejected a time or two during his coaching career so it’s only right for him to head the crusade for freedom of speech for coaches in the PAC 10 and across the nation. And what a better way to accomplish his goal than to put his request at the feet of President Barack Obama.

We don’t have freedom of speech as coaches, we can not discuss those things. I can’t discuss them, I can’t discuss them. Maybe Obama will change that rule, then we can talk

I guess this is the new fad in America. Have a problem? Ask Obama to fix it. Don’t like something? Ask Obama to change it. Want to trash officials after being ejected for acting a fool? Ask Obama for freedom of speech. Don’t worry Tim, I’m sure President Obama will get right on that one. At any rate, here’s the entire interview for those who can’t get enough of everything that is, Tim Floyd.

Being Greg Paulus

Over the years, Duke has always had players that the nation loved to hate. The hate mainly came about because those players would walk into your school’s gym, light your team up, and run off the court with a 20 point victory. Names like Laettner, Hurley, Battier, Reddick, and most recently Greg Paulus have all been seen as the player to hate on Duke’s teams. But unlike the rest, Greg Paulus was a marked man the minute he stepped on campus. Also unlike the rest, Paulus isn’t hated for outplaying the opposing team, he’s hated for other reasons that I just can’t put a finger on.

I will admit that I can fully understand the hate for Laettner, Hurley, Battier, and Reddick. Those four were good, very good. And their teams were good as well. Paulus, on the other hand, has had a rather rough four years which has culminated in losing his starting position in this, his senior year. And yet, he’s still seen as the “most hated” Duke player. If anything, he should be commended for his “take one for the team” attitude. Just look at some of the things he’s had to endure in the name of Duke University.

He’s continuously accused of flopping

He sacrifices his body….

Even when it means he will be featured on Sports Center for the wrong reasons

Even in his senior year, he continues to be selfless….

And play hard at all cost

So as Greg Paulus’ senior year winds down, I say let’s give the guy a break. I think he’s endured enough if you ask me.

Summit reaches 1000 wins… and counting

1000 wins! A number that represents greatness, longevity and durability. In a 73-43 blowout against conference opponent Georgia, Pat Summit became the first coach, men or women, in Division-1 athletics to reach that unprecedented milestone.

Summit was handed Tennessee’s women’s basketball program at the age of 22. During that time, women’s sports were an afterthought and weren’t given any respect or exposure. Despite all the adversity, Summit’s determination prevailed. 35 years, 1000 victories and 8 national championships later, she is the most revered figure in women’s basketball and has put the sport on the national stage.

Summit has accrued only 187 losses in her career, which averages to about 5 per season. The 12th ranked Lady Vols are a sub par17-5 and are in rebuilding mode with seven freshmen on the squad.

Though Summit has nothing left to prove, she has signed an contract extension through 2014. At the age of 56, Summit clearly has many good years left, and perhaps more national titles to win. As a sports fan, I would love to see her career continue; she’s a class act. When was the last time you’ve heard of violations from Tennessee’s women basketball program? I can’t recall any. If all of our collegiate athletic directors and coaches could put honesty and dedication ahead of winning, NCAA record books would be less tainted.

Excuse Me Sir. Can You Sign This Petition So Our Basketball Players Can Get Choked, I Mean Coached?

The life of a college student is filled with attending classes, studying, partying, and sleeping. In the time between those activities, there’s a lot of idle time. So much idle time that many get a part-time job, volunteer, or create a petition to get Bob Knight an interview for their school’s vacant head basketball coaching job. Jess Tullos, a senior from Athens majoring in speech communication at the University of Georgia, is doing the latter with his idle time.

I just feel like they should interview him at least, Tullos said. Here’s a guy that’s not even coaching right now who has won 902 games and a couple of national championships and he apparently wants the job. I think it’s ridiculous that we can’t produce a powerhouse basketball program with Atlanta an hour away. Just his name alone will put us on the national scene.

That sounds good in theory, Jess but basketball powerhouses aren’t built over night. It’s pretty obvious that UGA isn’t interested in anything but football so it really doesn’t matter who’s brought in to coach. And furthermore, have you consulted the players about how they feel about bringing Knight in?

I tried to get some players to sign it, too, but they were hesitant and that’s understandable.

Very understandable. I too, would be hesitant to sign anything that could get the life choked out of me. I say, just be happy with your football program, Jess. That’s the easiest and safest thing to do.

ACC Road Games: Where Stomach Ulcers Happen

Don’t you just hate it when you come home from a long day to find ESPN showing the worst college basketball games they can find? Well, last night was not supposed to be one of those nights. Wake Forest to take on Miami in the early game, then a battle between Duke and Clemson. Finally, two quality match ups. Well, they both quickly turned into bloodbaths.

Wake Forest was only able muster 52 points in their 79-52 loss to the Canes and even worse, Duke could only come up with 47 points in their 74-47 loss to Clemson. The one similarity in these two games? The two teams that got trounced were road teams. Which leads me to the point of all this. Playing on the road in the ACC aint easy. No matter how much the experts try to hype up the Big East or any other conference, the fact remains that playing in the ACC, especially on the road, is extremely taxing. There aren’t any easy wins and if you’re off your game, like tonight, you’ll get blown away. So while the experts continue to king The Big East as this year’s “power conference”, I’ll just wait until the end of March to see ACC teams making deep runs in the NCAA Tournament while Big East teams bow out early and often.

And just in case you need any more proof of life in the ACC, here you go.

Ahhh, it never gets old.
