Jay Mariotti

The recently embattled, Jay Mariotti dodged a bullet last week when the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office decided not to pursue any charges against him. He didn’t, however, dodge the bullet that came from the city of Los Angeles’ prosecution.

City prosecutors have charged ESPN personality and sports columnist Jay Mariotti with seven misdemeanors in connection with an incident last month in which he allegedly grabbed and shoved his live-in girlfriend, officials said Monday.
Charges include two counts of domestic violence with injury, two counts of domestic violence, one count of grand theft, one count of false imprisonment and one count of vandalism. Each of the counts carries a maximum of a year in jail, meaning he could face up to seven years behind bars.
Mariotti is to be arraigned Friday at the downtown criminal courts building.

Jay Mariotti

Everyone’s favorite sportswriter spent his Saturday morning in a Los Angeles jail. The details are scarce at the moment and unfortunately they aren’t releasing his mugshot. At any rate, The LA Times has what we do know at the moment.

Renee Gork Learned The Hard Way That They Don’t Play No Games In Arkansas

Bobby Petrino

As far as sports goes, the state of Arkansas only has one thing to cheer for. That’s the University of Arkansas. And they’ll be d@#ned if any other school will be cheered in their state. So that means you aint wearing shirts, hats, or anything else affiliated with another university on their watch. And you’re definitely not strolling into Bobby Petrino’s press conference wearing a Florida Gators hat and asking two questions. You may get away with one question, but definitely not two. And after it’s all said and done, you will be promptly fired.

Think it’s a game?  Just as Renne Gork.

Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino reprimanded an employee of Hog Sports Radio on Saturday for wearing a Florida Gator cap to a post-scrimmage press conference.

Apparently there were further consequences for radio host Renee Gork, who committed the fashion and professional faux pas while on the clock for 99.5 FM in NWA.

Gork, a University of Florida graduate tweeted Monday from the station’s Twitter account that she had been fired. Her hope was to apologize on air.

And just how does Bobby Petrino handle reporters asking questions while wearing a Florida Gators hat? Well let’s see, shall we?

Cold blooded.

Mike Leach Lands A TV Gig With CBS College Sports

Mike Leach

The last time we heard from former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach, he was fighting for a job that he eventually lost. Well, Leach has finally got himself a new gig as an Analyst for CSB College Sports.

NEW YORK — Former Texas Tech football coach Mike Leach will call games on television as he pursues a lawsuit over his firing from the school.

Cable network CBS College Sports announced Monday that Leach will work as an analyst this season.

Leach will work with play-by-play announcer Roger Twibell on CBS College Sports, which airs Mountain West, Conference USA and service academy games.

Looks to be a good deal for both parties involved unless Leach decides to go raw and uncut on air.

The Swooning Over Tim Tebow Spreads To Journalists

If for some reason it hasn’t sunk in just yet, let me let you in on what the rest of the world has already realized. Everyone loves Tim Tebow.

Women want to marry him. Kids want to be like him. And now, journalists just want the man’s autograph.

And if that’s not enough, how about a journalist that believes after one preseason game Tebows should be promoted to the backup role in Denver.

Yep, the Tebow slurping won’t miss a beat in the NFL.

Is ESPN Being Truthful About The LeBron Story Or Do They Think We’re All Idiots?

As you may have guessed, the disappearing “LeBron takes on Vegas” story has become a pretty big deal. It’s become such a big deal that ESPN had to make a statement explaining their rationale behind removing the story from their website.

From Rob King, Vice President & Editor-in-Chief, ESPN Digital Media:

“ESPN.com will not be posting the story in any form. We looked into the situation thoroughly and found that Arash did not properly identify himself as a reporter or clearly state his intentions to write a story. As a result, we are not comfortable with the content, even in an edited version, because of the manner in which the story was reported. We’ve been discussing the situation with Arash and he completely understands. To be clear, the decisions to pull the prematurely published story and then not to run it were made completely by ESPN editorial staff without influence from any outside party.”

And from Arash Markazi:

“I have been in conversations with ESPN.com’s editors and, upon their complete review, understand their decision not to run the story. It is important to note that I stand by the accuracy of the story in its entirety, but should have been clearer in representing my intent to write about the events I observed.”

Now, all of this sounds good, but I gotta say, I don’t completely buy it.

For one, why would LeBron and the gang let Markazi follow them around without properly identifying himself? Markazi is a writer. LeBron and the crew know that. What other intentions would he have to hang with them other than wanting to write a story? That just doesn’t make much sense to me. The only way that it could is if Markazi lied about his intentions.

Secondly, how does Markazi recall all of the events without some sort of “note-taking”. Markazi probably didn’t trail the crew writing in a notepad, but his story is filled with very specific details. Not saying that Markazi couldn’t have written the piece from pure memory, but it is something to think about. And if he was somehow “taking notes” on what was going on, it’s pretty far fetched to think that someone in the LeBron entourage didn’t notice.

And lastly, if ESPN is really being truthful about all of this, what took so long for the explanation? If the story is as cut and dry as they want us to believe, this statement could’ve came yesterday. Instead, it’s comes more than 24 hours since the sorry disappeared.

I just don’t buy it.

What We Have Here Is The LeBron James Story That Was Pulled From ESPN’s Website

ESPN’s Arash Markazi got the pleasure of hanging with LeBron and the boys on a fun filled excursion to Vegas. Markazi wrote what he saw. ESPN pulled what he saw from their website. I’m just here to make sure you get to read it. (And fuel the fire)
