Titans CEO Steve Underwood says team not budging on offsets for Marcus Mariota

images (51)With training camps getting ready to start in a few weeks, Tennessee Titans fans are still waiting for QB Marcus Mariota to sign a contract. Mariota, who was drafted with the number two pick in the NFL Draft is one of three unsigned draft picks. Mariota and Titans have not come to terms on some of the offset language that will be in the contract. Even with training camp approaching, Titans CEO Steve Underwood says the team will not budge on offsets for Mariota.

“We’ve always had offset language in our player contracts. It’s nothing new,” Underwood said. “I think it is important where a high first-round draft pick is concerned, because it’s the precedent. Everything that we do is precedential for the next round of contracts.

“So keeping the offset in place is something we want to be able to do going forward. And the minute you back away from the contract principle then you no longer are able to assert it going forward.”

While I can see why both sides are fighting about this, Mariota can’t afford to miss any days of training camp if he plans on being the starter.
