Could Wesley Matthews be on the way out in Portland?

16737416-mmmainAfter getting manhandled by the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA Playoffs, the Portland Trailblazers have to finds ways to improve their roster. Keeping forward LaMarcus Aldridge would be big, but there is another important piece who is eligible to be a free agent as well. Wesley Matthews is a free agent this off-season and he will be in high demand by a lot of teams. The Trailblazers were not the same team once Matthews was lost for the season, so his value to them should be high. General managerĀ Neil Olshey knows Matthews is important, but knows he is highly regardedĀ around the league.

“As evidenced by our 11-15 record (actually 11-16) without Wesley and a first-round playoff exit for a team we thought had chance to compete for the Western Conference title, we know how important he is,” Olshey says. “We know his value to us; we also know he’s going to have market value around the league.”

“I’d like to think we’ll have a pretty good idea of what direction they want to go in at that point,” he says. “Part of our job is to continue the cycle of bringing in new talent. We are in a great place regardless of what happens in free agency, (but) we will be a stronger organization if we return a lot of our free agents.”

I think losing Matthews will hurt the Blazers chances even more with Aldridge. I wouldn’t be shocked if both players are on different teams next season.
