According to Daniel Kaplan of Sports Business Journal, in a 12-month period ending March 31, 2013, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell took home more the $44 million. The $44 million included a $9.1M of deferred pension and bonus earned the previous year.
The league’s tax return that will be filed on Tuesday will show that Goodell earned a $3.5 million salary and a $40.36 million bonus.
As the NFL has become more profitable, Goodell has seen his compensation grow. Back in 2010, Goodell made $11.6 million. And in 2011, Goodell took home nearly $29.5.
The NFL’s compensation committee comprised of NFL owners Arthur Blank, Robert Kraft and Jerry Richardson are onboard with Goodell’s compensation and sent out an email to fellow owners explaining the number.
“Goodell’s compensation reflects our pay-for-performance philosophy and is appropriate given the fact that the NFL under his consistently strong leadership continues to grow”.
It’s good to be the commissioner of the most profitable professional sports league in America.
