The last time we discussed Luol Deng on this site, it was because he was upset about a report claiming he wasn’t happy in Cleveland. Now on the brink of the trade deadline, Deng is being talked about again.
It’s well known by now that the Cavaliers are trying to move Deng and he surely knows it as well. The teams interested in trading for Deng want him to sign to a long-term extension. But according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports, Deng is unwilling to commit to signing a long-term extension.
“Forward Luol Deng’s reluctance to commit to a long-term extension with any team before July free agency makes it unlikely that the Cleveland Cavaliers can find a willing trade partner before Thursday’s NBA deadline, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
The Cavaliers have had conversations with several teams, including Dallas, Detroit and Indiana about Deng, league sources told Yahoo Sports. Nevertheless, there’s no traction on a deal and no team seems inclined to give up valuable assets for a player who could walk away in free agency.”
Many will bad mouth Deng, but I think this is a good move. He should just wait it out, then sign with the team that best fits him in the off-season.
