Are the 2013 Florida State Seminoles the greatest team from the state of Florida ever?

images (1)It seems like every year we always ask some variation of this question about a program once they win the National Title. Florida State had an unbelievable season considering all the players they lost to the NFL and having to replace six coaches. So it’s inevitable that this question is being asked about the 2013 Noles.

In the state of Florida, the team that everyone considers the greatest team from the state is the 2001 Miami Hurricanes. The Florida Gators had some good teams but since they don’t have an undefeated season, they can’t be included. So I ask, do you think this Florida State team is the greatest in team history? Well if you ask Mike Bianchi of the Sun-Sentinel, he says yes.

Here are some of the reasons why he thinks so:

“FSU is the most statistically dominant national champion of the BCS era and the second-most dominant team of all-time. As I wrote in my original column, you have to go all the way back to the 1944 Army team of Doc Blanchard and Glenn Davis to find a team that blew out its opponent by a wider margin. That Army team beat opponents by an average of 52 points per game. This FSU team beat opponents by an average 40 points per game – a significantly wider margin than the 2001 ‘Canes (33 ppg).”

“The Seminoles blew out every team during the course of the regular season by at least two touchdowns. The 2001 ‘Canes couldn’t even score an offensive touchdown in a nail-biting 18-7 victory over Boston College and needed a failed Virginia Tech two-point conversion in the regular-season finale to hold off the Hokies”.

“FSU scored more points this season than any team in the history of college football. In fact, going into the national title game, FSU’s kicker Roberto Aguayo had more points by himself than the team’s 13 previous opponents”. Now all of those were good examples on why the Seminoles should be up for consideration, but this next line I’m sure is going to rub Miami Hurricanes fans the wrong way.

“Seriously, who would you rather have quarterbacking your team — Jameis Winston or Ken Dorsey? This is akin to asking the question of your wife on Valentine’s Day: Where would you like to go to dinner – Ruth’s Chris or Golden Corral? Nothing wrong with Golden Corral. They have great meat loaf and macaroni and cheese on their bottomless buffet, but if you want to win the night, you choose Ruth’s Chris every time”.

“Dorsey was a really good college quarterback; Winston — only the second freshman to ever win the Heisman Trophy — is already one of the great college quarterbacks of all-time”.

In my opinion, I believe that the 2013 FSU team is very good, but I don’t think they are better than the two FSU championship teams before them. So to me,the 2001 Miami team is still tops in the state, but the 2013 FSU team is easily in the top 5.
