Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports is reporting that the NCAA has been investigation the Syracuse basketball program “for years” and that the school has “received a letter of preliminary inquiry from the NCAA.”
According to Dodd, the violations are said to be “both major and wide ranging.” The violations also spread to the Syracuse football team, but mainly focus on the basketball program.
So just how major are the violations? This paragraph by Dodd should give you a flavor of the violations:
The ongoing investigation has apparently grown larger in scope. When asked to characterize how wide-ranging the probe might be, a source with knowledge of the case told CBSSports.com: “Throw a dart at the [NCAA] Manual [and you would hit a violation by Syracuse].”
If Jim Boeheim wasn’t thinking of retiring after the season, this may push him to do just that.
