In May of 2011, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shared that he felt “slighted” and he was “unhappy” that he didn’t have a statue outside Staples Center.
Magic Johnson, Jerry West, Chick Hearn, Wayne Gretzky and Oscar De La Hoya each have a statue outside of Staples Center so Abdul-Jabbar felt compelled to whine about not having one of his own. And now it looks like Abdul-Jabbar’s whining has paid off.
According to the LA Times, the Lakers have plans to unveil a statue of Abdul-Jabbar at some point in the 2012-2013 season. The Lakers have maintained that there are no set criteria on who is chosen to have a statue and they always had plans of honoring Abdul-Jabbar with a statue one day.
Along with complaining about not having a statue has also complained about “the Lakers not awarding him playoff shares” and “how he often had to sit on the back of the plane on team trips.” But now that he finally got his statue, maybe he won’t be so talkative.
