Charlotte Bobcats hire Mike Dunlap as head coach

We thought we were pretty sure we knew the candidates for the Bobcats head coaching job: Jerry Sloan, Brian Shaw, Quinn Snyder. But boy were we wrong.

Seemingly out of nowhere, the Charlotte Observer reports someone by the name of Mike Dunlap has been named head coach of the Bobcats.

Dunlap, currently an assistant with St. Johns, was one of 10 candidates interview for the job. And though many of us have never heard of him, he has NBA ties and is well respected in NBA circles for his defensive mind. Something that impressed the Bobcats front office.

The Observer’s source, who asked for anonymity because Dunlap’s hire isn’t official, said Dunlap impressed the front office with his high energy and collaborative approach. Also, he wants to run an up-tempo offense and attacking defense that figures to fit some of the Bobcats’ younger personnel.

In any other circumstance, you would have to be surprised by this hire. But with Michael Jordan in charge, nothing should surprise you.
