After eventful year in Orlando where he admitted Dwight Howard wanted him fired despite Howard denying it, Stan Van Gundy was eventually fired. And with open jobs in Charlotte, Portland, and possibly Los Angeles (Clippers), Van Gundy was obviously a candidate for at least one, if not all of those jobs.
But according to the NY Daily News, Van Gundy won’t be coaching any of those teams because he is planning to take next season off.
Even though Charlotte wants to talk to him about its coaching vacancy, Stan Van Gundy is looking to take the year off and then come back to coach in 2013-14. His preference is to work in a warm-weather city for a contender, which is too bad for the Pacers, who probably are less than thrilled about Frank Vogel’s failure to make key defensive adjustments when Indy bombed in Games 4-6 vs. Miami.
It’s next to impossible to pinpoint where Van Gundy could land in 2013-2014. We know that the Florida teams are not happening, so the pickings get slim for warm-weather city contending teams.
If Vinny Del Negro survives the offseason, the Clippers could be in play again next season. But a more intriguing option could be the other team in Los Angeles, the Lakers.
Just throwing it out there.
