This time last week, the Knicks were falling apart at the seams and a power struggle between Carmelo Anthony and Mike D’Antoni led to D’Antoni resigning.
Now, Mike Woodson is at the helm, Carmelo Anthony is putting in effort on both ends of the court, and the Knicks are riding a 4 game win streak. And all that goodness has led to Mike Woodson sitting down for an interview with the New York Post and proclaiming that he believes that the Knicks can win the NBA championship, not next year, not the year after, but this year.
Q: If you make the playoffs, what qualities do you want this team to have when the playoffs begin?
A: They have a legitimate shot to win the title. When the playoffs come around, it’s open season. Who’s playing the hardest, the best … who believes that they can really get it done. Homecourt and all that goes out the door. It’s great to have homecourt, but hey, we (2004 Pistons) didn’t have it in the Eastern Conference Final that year, and we ended up beating the Pacers. We didn’t have it in the Finals that year, and we beat the Lakers …and if these guys are honest with themselves, and hold each other accountable, their credibility is rollin’ high, man, anything can happen in a playoff series. Anything.
He’s definitely right. Once the playoff start, anything CAN happen. We just don’t see this Knicks team beating both the Bulls and Heat in seven games series where they don’t have home court advantage.
Now, we could be wrong.
But we’re not.
