It’s beginning to seem that Dwight Howard finally gets it. After the great Oscar Robertson came out and said Howard should “keep his mouth shut” about potential trades publicly, he has done just that. He refused to talk about it during the All Star break and we haven’t heard much from him since. And instead of complaining and talking, it seems that he has working behind the scenes with Magic organization to land a big name before the trade deadline. That big name?
The Orlando Magic has made offers for Nash in the past and sources close to the situation say that they’ll attempt to acquire the 16-year veteran in the next two weeks. Dwight Howard has asked the front office to pursue Nash and sources close to Howard believe he won’t exercise his early termination option if the team is able to acquire Nash and re-sign him this summer.
Landing Nash AND Dwight Howard re-upping with the Magic? That would be music to Magic fans’ ears everywhere. This next statement unfortunately is not.
While Orlando would love to acquire Nash, it won’t be easy. Phoenix loves Nash and was hoping to re-sign him to a two-year deal this summer. Their policy has always been that they wouldn’t deal Nash, unless he asked for a trade. That’s not Nash’s style and he’s not ready to turn on his teammates, fans or close friends within the organization.
Landing Nash is a long shot, but it has to be good news for Magic fans that Howard has moved away from the complaining and is taking an interest in the team he is actually a member of. Something he should have been doing all along.
