Time to talk a little NCAA tournament. We’ll give you what we’re thinking about each region and even make our picks.
First up, the South Region.
The team that is primed to pull off the first round upset: VCU
This would be an upset only when you take into account seeding. Make no mistake, this isn’t the same team that went to Final Four last season, but they can still cause a lot of teams problems. Offensively, there are not as explosive as last year’s VCU team, but they are a very good defensive team. They are going to press and trap the entire game and we think that this will be the key to wearing down a really talented Wichita St. team.
A top seed that may not make it out of the 1st weekend: Indiana
We believe Indiana to be a very shaky squad. Yes, they beat Kentucky, but they’ve also lost to teams like Minnesota, Nebraska, and Iowa. And it doesn’t help that they lost Verdell Jones III for the season in the Big Ten tournament. If the Indiana team that beat the likes of Kentucky, Ohio State, and Michigan State shows up, they could advance far. If not, they could be at home watching after the first weekend.
A team other than Kentucky that can win the region: Baylor
Baylor has the talent to win this region, but do they have the coaching and “want to”? This team is dangerous when Scott Drew doesn’t actually have to coach and his players actually care. And since it only takes a team to put it together for six games, winning this region is certainly doable for the Bears.
Who we’re taking in the 1st round: Kentucky, Connecticut, VCU, Indiana, UNLV, Baylor, Xavier, Duke
Who we’re taking in round 2: Kentucky, VCU, Baylor, Duke
Sweet Sixteen winners: Kentucky, Baylor
Regional Champion: Kentucky
