In a article that the NY Times released on Sunday, Welts stated, “This is one of the last industries where the subject is off limits,” referring to homosexuality in sports.
Welts, a former exec for the NBA league office, told league Commissioner David Stern his secret before going public.
His decision to take his sexuality public was partly prompted by Lakers’ guard Kobe Bryant’s gay slur during a game in April.
The 58-year-old Welts, hopes that his courage will help others in the gay community succeed in the world of sports. To date, no professional athletes have come out while playing their respective sport.
