Forget Brian Kelly And Randy Edsall, Some Alumni Want Tommy Tuberville

Notre Dame athletic director, Jack Swarbrick has conducted the search for Notre Dame’s new head coach with a quiet flair. We’ve only been able to rely on “reports” that Swarbrick has met with Kelly and “reports” that there may be mutual interest between the Irish and Edsall. And that’s all we have gotten so far.

This is a far cry from the last coaching search that was embarked upon by Notre Dame. Remember when the Irish were turned down by a guy who said Notre Dame was his “dream job” right out in the open for all to see? Swarbrick is determined to make sure that that doesn’t happen again. So, close to the vest is how Swarbrick is playing it.

So besides the “reports” of Swarbrick having interest in Kelly and maybe Edsall, we have no idea who  exactly is on the short list for the job. But there are rumblings on a certain name that isn’t on the list, and some prominent alumni want to know why.

Sources close to the search process and some powerful alumni with heavy checkbooks have tried to introduce the former Auburn head coach into the core of the search, but so far he sits on the periphery.

Tuberville, when reached at his home in Auburn, Ala. on Wednesday afternoon, acknowledged as much, but would welcome the process taking an 11th-hour, wide left turn in his direction.

“I don’t think there’s any doubt Notre Dame can win and win big again,” said Tuberville, whose last trip to South Bend came last spring when he spoke at a Notre Dame coaches clinic at Weis’ request.

“I just think they need to find the right guy with the right philosophy.”

To think Tommy Tuberville isn’t on anyone’s short list, let alone Notre Dame’s short list is a mystery.

– Notre Dame wants a proven coach.  CHECK!
– Someone who values running the ball and defense.  CHECK!
– Can recruit with the best of ’em. CHECK!

Give this man an interview.
