Cincinnati’s Players Not Exactly Thrilled With The News Of Brian Kelly Taking The Notre Dame Job

When Brian Kelly was announced as Notre Dame’s new head coach on yesterday, not many people can say that they were surprised, or that they even blinked an eye. We all saw this coming weeks, maybe even months ago. Despite pretty much the entire nation feeling that Kelly was going to be the Irish’s next head coach, the Cincinnati players had other thoughts. And those thoughts have made the players pretty pissed.  Read for yourself:

UC hosted its football banquet, Thursday, Dec. 10, and The Cincinnati Enquirer reported tight end Ben Guidugli spoke afterward, expressing his complete displeasure for the set of circumstances the team find itself in.

“We don’t really care what he has to say anymore,” Guidugli said. “He can go talk to his Notre Dame team. We’re ready to move forward with whoever wants to move forward with us. He’s not on the boat anymore, so we’ve got to continue on.”

Oh, they’re just getting started.

After the meeting with Kelly, Guidugli said, “We already knew what he was going to say. We weren’t giving him a round of applause or anything. It’s like somebody turned their back on us. We brought this whole thing this far. We’ve come this far. To have someone walk out now is disappointing.”

Kelly’s statements leading up to a title-clinching win over Pittsburgh last Saturday made it harder to accept.

“The Tuesday when we were practicing for Pittsburgh, he said he loves it here and he loves this team and loves coaching here and his family loves it here,” quarterback Tony Pike told AP.

“He went for that money, that wasn’t no time for me to be in there,” Gilyard said. “I don’t want to hear it. I’m thoroughly disgusted with this situation, that it lasted this long. I heard everything I needed to hear, and that was, ‘I accepted the Notre Dame job.’”

“I feel like there was a little lying in this thing, I feel like he’s known the whole time. I kind of had a gut feeling that he was going to stay because he told me he was going to be here. But it is what it is. He made a business decision,” Gilyard said.

Talk about a sendoff.
