It’s going to be just like old times in St. Louis, presumably minus the steroid, as Tony La Russa has signed a one-year contract to return for his 15th season as Cardinals’ manager. And the icing on the cake is Mark McGwire will be joining him as hitting coach. Something that La Russa has been begging McGwire to do for years.
And in case you think McGwire was absent from that press conference I’m sure you didn’t see because he’s hiding, the Cardinals say think again.
McGwire was not at the news conference at Busch Stadium. La Russa and general manager John Mozeliak said there will be no effort to protect McGwire from reporters and questions about steroids.
“By no means is he trying to hide, and by no means are we trying to hide him,” Mozeliak said.
“He loves the game. He loves the Cardinals,” chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said. “It’s a great opportunity for him and a great opportunity for us.”
And a great opportunity for some pissed off reporter to tee-off on him. Should be interesting to say the least.
