San Francisco 49ers at Minnesota Vikings, Sunday 1:00pm
I guess you could say that from the outcome of my game of the week pick from week two that I am a complete idiot. However, I’m 1-1 overall after the first two weeks of the season and looking to get back on the right track with week three.
This is the only game between two 2-0 teams this week, so the 49ers vs. Vikings was a no-brainer for my game of the week. It features the NFC‘s two leading rushers in Adrian Peterson and Frank Gore, also both teams come into this game with top 10 defenses behind them.(Vikings 4th, 49ers 7th). It’s gonna be fun watching Brett Favre battle against a coach he once played against, with arguably his best team since his Super Bowl days back in 96-97.
Adrian Peterson vs. Patrick Willis: The best running back in the game going up against arguably the best middle linebacker will be a fun matchup to watch for the next 5-10 years. At this point, Willis has the edge in my opinion. He and the rest of the 49ers’ defense held AP to his worst performance as a pro, gaining 3 yards on all of 14 carries.
X – Factor(s)
Percy Harvin and Brett Favre: Two names as to why I’m already thinking of changing my NFC Super Bowl pick. No longer can teams stack 8 and 9 men in the box to load up on AP because of Harvin and Favre’s ability to stretch the field. (Not that it matters anyway after he still ran through the Lions for 92 yards on 15 carries.) San Fran will have to make a decision on whether to put everything they have into stopping Peterson or simply letting him get his and shutting down the rest of the Vikings’ offense. It’s going to be a tough cover either way.
Vikings 24, 49ers 17: I’m not really good with picking scores, but barring one of these teams breaking this game open, this will be a relatively short one because there will be a LOT of running. I think that the Vikings have too many weapons on the offensive side of the ball. And I see young quarterback Shaun Hill throwing a costly interception late in the game that will give Minnesota a slight edge and the win.
