J Will drops in to chronicle the post-game war of words between Urban Meyer and Lane Kiffin.
Days after Florida’s 23-13 win over Tennessee, both coaches are still firing shots at each other. After the game Urban Meyer admitted that they were conservative, but didn’t feel like he had to bring out the big plays.
When I saw them start handing the ball off, you didn’t feel like they were going after the win,” Meyer said. “They want to shorten the game … and I remember looking up there and there’s 10 minutes left in the game and there’s no no-huddle. They’re down by 23-6 and the urgency [wasn't there].
“The way we lose a game there is throw an interception. … Let’s find a way to win the game. The blog lines and everything else, we’re not trying to impress the pollsters. We’re trying to win the game. A lot of it had to do with the way they were playing. That made our life a little easier.”
Meyer also said that the flu had a big part in why they couldn’t open up the offense. Well, that didn’t sit well with Kiffin who had this to say about some of Meyer’s comments.
“This offseason the commissioner made a big deal of renewing vows in terms of what we say about other teams and other players” Kiffin said. “Obviously Urban feels he doesn’t need to follow that. We won’t say anything else.” but Kiffin made sure he got one swipe in. When asked if the Vols were worried about a flu bug after Meyer’s postgame revelation that several Florida players were sick, Kiffin said, “We’ll wait and see, and after we’re not excited about our performance we’ll tell you that everybody was sick.”
These two are going make the rivalry bigger than it already is. But just to add more fuel to the fire, take a look at this video of Tennessee QB coach David Reaves taking a sign from a Florida fan and throwing it on the ground.
