Russian tennis star and younger sister of Marat Safin, former #1 men’s player, Dinara Safina is the number one women’s tennis player in the world.
The WTA ranks players using a point system and Safina tops the list with 10,521 followed by Serena Williams who’s accrued 8,758, but has publicly displayed her disgust with the ranking system.
Serena does have a legit beef; she is the reigning U.S. Open, Australian Open, and Wimbledon champion and is yet ranked #2. Safina’s best results at Grand Slam events: runner-up in the French Open’s 2008, 2009 tournaments along with a second place finish in the 2009 Australian Open, she lost to Serena Williams in straight sets.
Apparently, WTA rankings and point system is equated by the amount of tournaments players compete in instead of how they perform. This outdated ranking system rewards mediocrity and attendance as opposed to Grand Slam dominance; Serena should be #1.
