In today’s MLB landscape, it’s rare to see any player or former player admit to anything. Who am I kidding by saying it’s rare? It just plain doesn’t happen. That’s why it’s so refreshing (and entertaining) when someone finally comes clean. Darren Daulton has come clean. And when I say he’s come clean, I mean he’s COME CLEAN. Well, sorta.
During an interview with ESPN Radio Philadelphia, Daulton discussed his old Phillies’ teammates, his new book, and even drugs. Yep, a former MLB player was actually discussing drug use. Shocking isn’t it?
When asked did he use steroids, he had this to say.
As we know Mike, I’ve been in rehab, I’ve been in jail, not necessarily for those reasons. I’ve taken more drugs than steroids. I’m not going to apologize for the things I’ve done in life. That’s life, that’s how you learn. We’ve all done stuff that in society people perceive them as bad. I just don’t care to give that any more energy because people will take that and run with it. I’ve been in a rehab before
A little dancing by Daulton, but bear with him, he’s just warming up. All he needs is a nice follow-up question.
Follow-up: I understand that, I’m just trying to pin it down, were you using steroids as a player?
If I told you all the drugs that I’ve taken, Mike, you would open that up as a can of worms (laughing). I don’t feel that you or anyone else needs to know anything that I’ve ever done to respect me. No disrespect, that’s just the way I am. I feel if I told you all the drugs I’ve ever taken that would reflect on someone else. I can assure you there’s probably no one in any sport that has taken more drugs than I have and I think people still respect me. It’s not what goes in, it’s what comes out.
Even though Daulton wouldn’t completely admit to using steroids, he gave way more than most MLB players, past or present, would give. And you have to respect that. That’s why Darren “Dutch” Daulton has been crowned [Insert Drug Here] Champion for 2009. Congrats Dutch. You’ve definitely earned it.
