Mickelson gets a pass for this U.S. Open failure

The No.2 ranked player in the world, Phil Mickelson, finished 2nd for a fifth time at the U.S. Open, but this choke was excused.

Instead of crumbling in the presence of pressure, Mickelson perhaps was overcome with grief and raw emotion thinking of his wife, Amy.

Amy Mickelson was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo surgery on July 1. Noticeably distracted, Mickelson still gave a Herculean performance and even tied for the lead after a eagle at the 13th hole, but bogeys on 2 of the last 5 holes opened the door for the eventual champ, Lucas Glover.

As a fan favorite, Mickelson received much support from the fans at Bethpage Black. Even as he struggled internally, he sincerely acknowledged the fans, as he usually does, and gave spectators their money’s worth.

Who knows if Mickelson will ever win a U.S. Open, but even in defeat his performance at Bethpage this year was remarkable. Of course, a win would have been storybook, but the Mickelsons have more important issues at hand, issues much more important than golf, life and death.
