Besides 12th seeded Western Kentucky’s 76-72 win over the 5 seed Illinois, the brackets have pretty much held to form. No big wins, no bad losses, at least not just yet. Friday holds many opportunities for upsets. Lets see who’s going to try on Cinderella’s slipper along with the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky.
#3Syracuse-59 #14Stephen F. Austin-44
The Orangemen didn’t shoot well from behind the arch(2-16) and shooting guard Andy Rautins was 0-6, but fortunately the Lumberjacks shots weren’t falling either, they shot only 2-21 from 3pt. land. 59 points may work against Stephen F. Austin, but Syracuse will be needed to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.
#9Tenn- 75 #8Okla St.-77
This game was tight from wire to wire. The Cowboys senior PG Byron Eaton led the way with 20 points including the game winning lay-up with 7 seconds remaining. Oklahoma St. will likely face the #1seed in the East Region, Pittsburgh Panthers on Sunday.
#3Kansas-84 #14N. Dakota St.-74
The Midwest Region’s first game of the tournament was a goody. I’m sure that coach Bill Self didn’t expect a game this close, but the defending champs were carried by the efforts of Collins and Aldrich, they combined for 55 of the Jayhawks 84 points.
#6Marquette-58 #11Utah St.- 57
Marquette is still struggling without PG Dominic James, but managed to defeat Utah St. with a strong performance from forward Lazar Hayward; he led the Golden Eagles with 26 points. Don’t expect the Eagles to move on to the Sweet Sixteen, Sunday should be their last game of the season, their likely opponent is Missouri.
