NCAA Tourney: Afternoon games recap

#1 UNC-101
#16 Radford-58
Even without Ty Lawson the Tarheels displayed why they received a top seed, but Lawson will be needed to defeat Carolina’s next opponent, an athletic LSU team.

#1 UCONN-103
#16 Chattanooga-47
The Huskies proved that #1 seeds don’t need their coach on the sideline to pummel a 16 seed. The overmanned Mocs shot 25% from the field. Hopefully he’ll return when they face the 9th seeded Aggies on Saturday. UCONN still needs to improve free throw shooting, they shot a embarrassing 59%.

#5 Purdue-61
#12 Northern Iowa-56
The Boilermakers were able to squeak out a win after giving up a 14 point lead to the Panthers. Purdue forced Northern Iowa to play their hard-nosed style, which proved to be too much for the Panthers.

#10 Maryland-84
#7 California-71
Maryland took control of a close game late in the 2nd half and held the perimeter oriented Cal squad to 30% from the 3pt. line. Vasquez led the Terrapins with 27 points. Maryland will face the Memphis Tigers in the 2nd round on Saturday.
