I have mixed feelings about bringing this story to you. On one hand, I’m completely ecstatic that the Florida Gator basketball team has struggled over the past few years. But on the other hand, I realize how lucky we all are that a one Tyler Hansbrough had a late change of heart.
Let me take you back to 2005. Tyler Hansbrough is one of the top recruits in the nation and he was poised to sign with the Gators.
I was close, Hansbrough said of nearly playing for Billy Donovan. Very, very close.
Roy Williams and his staff had all but written him off because of a miserable official visit to the campus.
I didn’t know anybody here, Hansbrough said. They had this big ice storm, the airport was closed and I was shacked up watching TV. … I didn’t like it at all.
Luckily, Tyler’s father, Gene, convinced Tyler to take another visit and the rest is history. So I would like to take this opportunity to publicly than Gene Hansbrough for doing a service to us all. I don’t even want to think about what Donovan could have done with him. And I won’t even mention how much more annoying their fans would be with a couple more National Championships. But as they say, father knows best.
