The Biggest Loser

For the second straight day, the resident Nebraskan,R.Gray drops by to talk a little basketball.

With conference tournaments starting up yesterday in the major conferences, I decided to examine my most disappointing teams through the regular season. The top four fall within the Big 12, ACC, Big East, and Pac 10 conferences.

#4 Texas

In the Big 12, Texas lost D.J. Augustin from last season’s team. I guess he was too hard to replace even with AJ Abrams returning from a stellar season last year, (35.9 MPG, 16.5 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 1.5 APG). Texas gets a free pass since they’ll dance even with a 1st round loss in conference tourney

Preseason conf pick: #1
Overall record 20-10
Conference record 9-7

#3 Notre Dame

In the Big East, Notre Dame lost 12.5 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game from Rob Kurz. Too much? I’m not sure about that. Pretty disappointing when you returned the Big East Conference Player of the year in Luke Harangody, (29.0 MPG 20.4 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 1.7 APG). Notre Dame had to win arguably the toughest conference tournament to go dancing, which didn’t work out so well. But I don’t believe they are the biggest loser. Place them in another conference and tell me they wouldn’t be in the NCAA Tourney.

Preseason conf pick: #9
Overall record 18-13
Conference record 8-10

#2 USC

In the Pac 10, USC lost maybe the best player in the country from last season in OJ Mayo (20.7 ppg), they had a deep and talented backcourt returning with enough scoring to replace Mayo’s 21ppg. They still make the list of disappointments due to the #3 conference finish expectation. They can still get to the dance with a few more wins.

Preseason conf pick: #3
Overall record 18-12
Conference record 9-9

#1 Miami

In the ACC, Miami returned four starters and seven of their top nine players from last year’s 23-11 team, however they managed to finish in a disappointing 7th place tie. Was the ACC down last year or are the Hurricanes in line at the store for a package of “Ooops I Crapped My Pants”? They’ve got an outside shot at the tournament but its going to take a serious run….maybe a full one. Too much to work with to finish the season so poorly.

Preseason conf pick: #2
Overall record 18-11
Conference record 7-9
