Kobe drops 61 in MSG

Kobe Bryant scored 61 points in Madison Square Garden on Monday night against the Knicks, which set a new scoring record for the Garden.

Bryant eclipsed Michael Jordan’s visitor’s record of 55 at MSG, while also bettering Bernard King’s 60 points in 1984.

The Lakers won 126-117 and looked quite formidable without center Andrew Bynum, who is out for 8-12 weeks with a MCL injury to his right knee.

The fans both booed and joined in MVP chants while Bryant stunned a sold-out crowd. Despite his rival status, the fans gave Bryant a standing ovation when he left the court late in the fourth quarter. This was Kobe’s fifth 40+point game in the Garden.

Bryant went 19-31 from the field and connected on all 20 of his free throws. Pau Gasol added a quiet 31 points and 14 rebounds. This performance showed who the real King of MSG is. Kobe, not Lebron, at least not yet.
