Over the years, Duke has always had players that the nation loved to hate. The hate mainly came about because those players would walk into your school’s gym, light your team up, and run off the court with a 20 point victory. Names like Laettner, Hurley, Battier, Reddick, and most recently Greg Paulus have all been seen as the player to hate on Duke’s teams. But unlike the rest, Greg Paulus was a marked man the minute he stepped on campus. Also unlike the rest, Paulus isn’t hated for outplaying the opposing team, he’s hated for other reasons that I just can’t put a finger on.
I will admit that I can fully understand the hate for Laettner, Hurley, Battier, and Reddick. Those four were good, very good. And their teams were good as well. Paulus, on the other hand, has had a rather rough four years which has culminated in losing his starting position in this, his senior year. And yet, he’s still seen as the “most hated” Duke player. If anything, he should be commended for his “take one for the team” attitude. Just look at some of the things he’s had to endure in the name of Duke University.
He’s continuously accused of flopping
He sacrifices his body….
Even when it means he will be featured on Sports Center for the wrong reasons
Even in his senior year, he continues to be selfless….
And play hard at all cost
So as Greg Paulus’ senior year winds down, I say let’s give the guy a break. I think he’s endured enough if you ask me.
