In the AP and Coach’s Polls, the Gators are ranked #1, but Utah received 16 1st place votes in the AP both poll. Utah was the only team in FBS to finish the season undefeated.
Is Florida the true champion? Well, that answer depends on who you ask. Some believe that Utah has a legit beef, while others vouch for Texas or USC who both finished with 1 loss.
Without a playoff system, deciding who is better than who gets kind of messy. Instead of creating an efficient way to create a playoff system, the BCS uses some computer format to rank teams. Therefore, we are left judging which team’s loss was worst than the other’s. Florida, the BCS champ, lost to Mississippi who beat Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl; Texas Tech beat Texas, but Texas beat Oklahoma, who played for the National Championship. Not to mention USC who won the PAC-10, a conference that finished 5-0 in bowl games this season. I know, it doesn’t make any sense at all.
When will the madness end? Only when the BCS commissioners and university presidents decided they’ve made enough money. There were 34 bowl games this season, too many in my opinion. Of all the major collegiate sports, college football is the only one that picks a champion rather then letting the players decide it on the field. Nevertheless, I still congratulate Florida on a great season, but when college football finally incorporates a playoff system, BCS era champs are going to have a big asterisk next to their name.
