Detroit Lions make NFL history: 0-16, Marinelli Fired

It is nearly impossible to go 0-16 in the NFL, but the Detroit Lions managed to be that bad in the 2008 season. In the age of free agency, one with think that any team can achieve at least one win; the Lions proved us all wrong. The Lions join the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers as the only team in the Super Bowl era to go winless, the Bucs finished 0-14 that year.

Adding insult to a bruised ego, head coach Rod Marinelli was fired by the Lions organization today. Marinelli went 10-38 in 3 seasons with the lowly franchise, losing 23 of the team’s last 24 games. The city of Detroit has endured some hardships in 2008; they’ve fired a corrupt mayor, the auto industry is tanking and the Lions finished the season 0-16.

So whats next for the Lions? Hopefully the Ford family has a meticulous plan to select and hire capable players, coaches and executives. Until then, the Lions will be the laughing stock of the league.
