The Mullet is gone

Barry Melrose

Just five short months after being hired by the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning, Barry Melrose was fired by the team Friday.

After 16 games the Lightning are 5-7-4 and have dropped to 4th in the Southeast division with the team’s current 3-game losing streak.

Melrose will has been replaced by Assistant Coach Rick Tocchet, who was found guilty of sports gambling in August 2007. He is currently serving 2 years probation for the crime.

Tampy Bay wasn’t the first to fire its coach this season, they were preceded by the Chicago Blackhawks; they got rid of Denis Savard after only 4 games. With the NHL season still in the early stages, there will definitely be more firings.

Melrose was an analyst for ESPN for 12 years before accepting the Lightning job in the summer. With any luck, “The Mullet” will be back with ESPN as an analyst before the NHL season ends.
