No doubt the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks are the biggest surprise of this young season. The Hawks have started 5-0 and are on top of the standings in the Eastern Conference.
The Hawks ended last season with a 37-45 record and barely secured the final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs. With the late addition of PG Mike Bibby, the team proved to be a formidable test for the eventual champions Boston Celtics, who won the 1st round series in 7 games.
The Hawks have started the 2008-09 season with a sense of urgency and purpose, they’ve already won 3 road games. Two of those games were against playoff teams, the New Orleans Hornets and Orlando Magic.
Atlanta has 5 players that average double figures led by the All-Star Joe Johnson, who is the most underrated player in the league and arguably one of the most talented. Coach Mike Woodson has somehow inspired this team to play up to its potential; if this inspiration last all season the rest of the league better beware.
The team will next be in action on Tuesday in Chicago, the start of a 3-game road trip that also includes a trip to Boston.
