Carlisemo is out: who’s next?

PJ Carlisemo The Oklahoma City Thunder fired head coach P.J. Carlisemo after a dismal 1-12 start to the 2008-09 season.

The franchise formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics have a young and inexperienced team; which is, in today’s society, a coach’s nightmare. Young players get coaches fired.

P.J. Carlisemo hasn’t had much success as a NBA head coach. He’d been the head coach with the Portland Trailblazers and Golden State Warriors previously. His overall record is 204-296 and none of his stints have lasted more than 3 seasons. His NBA success came as an assistant for the San Antonio Spurs. As an assistant, he won 3 titles.

Also, lets not forget he’s been choked out by one of his players. While coaching the Warriors in 1997, player Latrell Sprewell had enough and physically assaulted the coach. So maybe his interpersonal skills aren’t so great.

Some guys aren’t meant to be NBA coaches, Carlisemo falls firmly into this category. He was great during 12 seasons as the head coach at Seton Hall, but has never been able to transfer that success to the NBA.

Assistant coach Scott Brooks has been named interim coach, but he shouldn’t get too comfortable. This will be a forgettable season for the Thunder, maybe worst than last season.

With a young core and mediocre veterans, the Thunder won’t be a factor in the Western Conference for at least another 2 years. GM Sam Presti better learn to show patience, because the worst is yet to come.
