The North Carolina Tar Heels will start the season ranked #1 in the AP poll and are the early favorites to win the National Championship. All five starters are returning for the 2008-09 season, led by the reigning National Player of the Year, PF Tyler Hansbrough.

Coach Roy Williams led the team to a 36-3 record, the ACC Regular Season and Tournament Championships, and the 2008 Final Four. The Tar Heel’s great season ended on a low-note; they were badly beaten by Williams’ former team, the eventual NCAA champs, the Kansas Jayhawks.
North Carolina is expected to win the ACC and possibly the NCAA championships, but their team depth will be tested early this season as well. Starting SF Marcus Ginyard will miss 8 weeks after under going surgery to repair a left foot stress fracture. Reserve Danny Green will be inserted into the starting line-up, which will make the team more explosive, but a little weaker on the defensive end. The Tar Heels will begin their season on Nov. 15 at home against Penn.
